Patrick is a registered patent attorney and Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) with over 15 years of legal experience that helps him communicate effective business solutions for opportunities and mitigating risks. He has an electrical engineering degree with power meter industry experience and particular technical expertise in electronics, computer software and business methods, telecommunications, medical devices, and mechanical arts. In helping clients build their international patent portfolios, Patrick leverages patent examiner histories and art unit analytics to maximize patent quality and to minimize cost and time-to-issuance.

An accomplished patent practitioner who regularly speaks to industry groups on emerging technologies and related legal implications, Patrick has procured well over 100 issued U.S. patents for his financial institution clients, in varying high-tech fields such as augmented reality, artificial intelligence, blockchain implementations, and network security. He has also prosecuted to issuance many patents that are integral to his clients’ achieving and maintaining strategic advantages over their competitors. Some such clients operate in diverse fields like range-of-motion medical devices, telecommunication protocols, multi-media delivery for customer experiences, and custom furniture manufacturing control systems. 

Patrick is one of only 20 Certified Licensing Professionals (CLP) in the Carolinas and approximately 900 worldwide. The CLP designation demonstrates Patrick’s knowledge, experience and proficiency in the licensing, transfer and commercialization of intellectual property assets. Patrick’s technology transactional experience includes helping clients negotiate a wide variety of license, procurement, purchase, maintenance, software, IT, SAAS, cloud storage, and other agreements.

A large part of Patrick’s sophisticated intellectual property practice involves performing legal investigations, such as infringement and risk mitigation searches, validity analyses, and freedom-to-operate investigations, as well as counseling clients with regard to trademark selection, protection, policing and opposition.

In addition to monetizing a client’s valuable IP by licensing, Patrick conscientiously advises his clients on enforcement of their patents, trademarks and copyrights, as well as on protection of their trade secrets, confidential information and know-how, and on related litigation opportunities.

Outside of work, Patrick has a long history of community service for chambers of commerce, bar organizations, and start-up incubators. He presently serves on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of the Central Carolinas, which aspires to correct Charlotte’s crisis of low upward socio-economic mobility. Patrick has three kids and a wonderful wife who shares his passion for Clemson University where they met.
